Mwangaza Project Coordinator Blog May 2009
(Note - This blog was written by the refugee Project Coordinator for this project. As English is not his first language, there may be some minor grammatical errors in his writing. Care was taken to clarify any passages that were confusing, while leaving most of the blog untouched in order to preserve his original tone.)
The Mwangaza Pre-school has just bounced back after the April holidays. There have been a number of activities at both of the two schools for the new term.
Activities:
- Holding of PTA meeting at both centers
- Clearing of the school surroundings and roads
- Cleaning of the school walls which are used for the preschool and English classes
- Introduction of the new curriculum for young adults in road 74
- Formation of a new curriculum for a beginners English class
- Evaluation of preschool students with pre-tests
Achievements:
- After the general individual evaluations which were recently conducted in the English class, it clearly indicated a great deal of success. Most of the students are now able to read and speak English where they weren’t before. Also their writing skills have greatly improved.
- Because of the renowned teaching methods of the Mwangaza teachers, parents have helped the school succeed by sending their children to the centers without fail. This has attributed to the raise in attendance by about a third in the preschool.
- The women’s beginning English class has made huge progress, and many of the students are ready for more advanced lessons now.
Challenges:
- Maintaining the commitment of adults for some classes has remained a big challenge so far. Attendance has greatly been affected since most adults would prefer to spend most of the day on their fields instead of attending lessons.
- Inadequate food in most families has also contributed to the slow increase in attendance for both pre-school and literacy classes.
